Twilight Abyss

PHOTOGRAPHED
LOCATION
Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta, Georgia

A glowing jellyfish appears to rise out of near-black water, its amber body surrounded by a web of long, curling tentacles. Captured at Georgia Aquarium in 2026, Twilight Abyss finds a strange, intricate beauty in the contrast between marine life and the deep blue around it.

The Story Behind the Photograph

Some underwater subjects make their presence known through speed or size. Jellyfish have another kind of visual power. Their translucent forms can reveal folds, membranes and threads that seem too delicate to hold together, yet they belong to animals perfectly adapted to life in water.

In Twilight Abyss, the darkness is as important as the subject. The open blue gives every pale filament a place to register. Lines loop back across the glowing bell, cross over one another and drift away into the surrounding space. The result feels almost abstract until the eye recognizes the living form at its center.

This is an aquarium photograph, not an invented view of an untouched abyss. The title belongs to the feeling of the image: a moment when familiar ideas about what an animal should look like give way to something altogether more unusual.
