The Twin Flames

PHOTOGRAPHED
LOCATION
ʻAkaka Falls State Park, Hawaiʻi Island, Hawaii

Two vivid scarlet flower spikes emerge from the lush vegetation of ʻAkaka Falls State Park on Hawaiʻi Island. Captured in 2024, The Twin Flames turns a small botanical subject into a striking study of color, repetition and the subtler beauty of a tropical forest.

The Story Behind the Photograph

ʻAkaka Falls State Park is best known for its waterfall, a landscape that naturally commands attention. But the plants around that setting have their own extraordinary character. A closer view reveals shapes and colors that might disappear into the abundance of green when seen as part of the larger forest.

The two flower spikes in this composition appear almost like flames held apart in the shadows. Tiny white blossoms interrupt the vivid red, while weathered leaves and quieter background tones emphasize their unusual form. Their similarity gives the picture rhythm, but small differences prevent it from becoming a perfect mirror image.

The Twin Flames is about finding a strong image without needing a grand landscape to fill the frame. In a place celebrated for its scale, the smallest subjects can be just as commanding.
