Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Hawaiʻi Island, Hawaii

At Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach on Hawaiʻi Island, sea turtles rest against a shoreline formed from dark volcanic material. Photographed in 2024, Forged Refuge places the animals' patterned shells and weathered forms against the remarkable texture of the black sand.

The Story Behind the Photograph

A beach is often imagined as an open stretch of sand waiting for visitors. Punaluʻu offers a different perspective. Its striking volcanic shoreline is also part of a living coastal environment, and the turtles resting there make that connection impossible to overlook.

In the foreground, two turtles occupy the rocky black sand with an almost monumental stillness, while others are visible farther away. Warm highlights trace the edges of their shells and skin, revealing patterns that might otherwise disappear into the darkness of the shore. The low viewpoint gives the animals a sense of presence without turning their rest into an action scene.

Forged Refuge draws its title from that relationship between animal and place. The coastline is not merely a backdrop for a photograph; it is somewhere wildlife belongs. Respecting that space—and observing without interfering—is part of what allows moments like this to exist.
