Lucent Drift
- PHOTOGRAPHED
- LOCATION
- Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta, Georgia
Against the deep blue of Georgia Aquarium, translucent jellyfish seem to dissolve into light and line. Photographed in 2026, Lucent Drift follows their flowing shapes as pale bodies and almost impossibly fine tentacles move through the water.
The Story Behind the Photograph
Without a rigid skeleton or the familiar outline of a fish, a jellyfish can seem less like an animal than a living drawing. Its bell pulses, while the delicate structures behind it respond to the water around it. Every movement changes the shape of the whole, so that no two moments arrange the trailing threads in quite the same way.
That sense of constant change gives this photograph its character. Some tentacles stretch nearly straight across the blue; others bend, twist and overlap. The warm, translucent bodies provide a gentle counterpoint to the cool water, but the finest lines are what keep drawing the eye back.
Lucent Drift is not intended to turn an aquarium encounter into a story of the open sea. It is an appreciation of the extraordinary forms that can be observed there—and of an animal whose apparent fragility is inseparable from the way it moves.
