Cobalt Mirage

PHOTOGRAPHED

Cobalt Mirage finds a quieter kind of spectacle in a peacock's plumage. Rather than a familiar fan of feathers held high, the bird is folded into its own elaborate colors, surrounded by an extraordinary maze of turquoise, green, cobalt and intricate eyespots.

The Story Behind the Photograph

The peacock is one of those animals whose appearance almost seems exaggerated, as though nature had no reason to stop adding detail. Its feathers are often admired from a distance, where their overall shape takes center stage. Up close, they become something else entirely: individual strands, shifting metallic colors and repeating markings that never quite look the same twice.

In this photograph, the bird is not displaying its train for an audience. Its head rests above the layered feathers, and the viewer's eye is free to wander through the small patterns that make up the larger form. The subdued stone behind the peacock gives that complexity room to emerge without competing for attention.

Cobalt Mirage is a portrait of natural extravagance in an unexpectedly still moment. The remarkable thing is not what the bird is doing, but how much there is to discover when it does almost nothing.
